--- --- ---
Two months have passed since Suhoon and Hyunchul got together. Suhoon was relieved when Hyunchul told him that Jaejoong approved of their relationship and Hyunchul even told him what his father had been up to when he was still studying in high school, which is something that Suhoon is finding hard to believe. However, they had their first fight as a couple after two weeks after being with each other when Hyunchul got furious at Suhoon after finding out that the other boy has not told his father about them.
“I can’t believe it!” Hyunchul whined in front of his Uncle Changmin and Uncle Junsu while waiting for their dinner, “He hasn’t told his father about us, how could he do that?!”
Changmin and Junsu shared a look of amusement.
“Did you ask what his reason is for keeping your relationship a secret from his father?” Jaejoong asked, coming out of the kitchen with a plate full of pork katsudon, which is one of Hyunchul’s most favorite food.
Hyunchul shook his head, and said, “I was so angry. I didn’t give him a chance to explain. I asked him stuff though but he neither confirmed nor denied it…”
“What kind of stuff did you asked?” Changmin inquired, interested.
“I asked if he’s ashamed of me or if he’s not really ready to fight for our relationship or if his father’s against gay relationships…” Hyunchul answered, making Junsu and Changmin snort at the same time.
Hyunchul frowned at his uncles, and said, “Can you make fun of me some other day? I don’t find this funny at all. It hurts, you know. You have a boyfriend who was so persistent to make you his at first then you find out that he hasn’t told the only family he got…it sucks.”
“Cheer up,” Jaejoong said, putting rice on Hyunchul’s plate, “I bet the reason why Suhoon wasn’t able to answer your questions is because you ranted out and you walked off.”
“Did you?” Junsu asked and Hyunchul nodded.
“Well, isn’t that so mature of you?” Changmin commented, snickering, “You do know how you are when you’re pissed off, right? You just verbally lash out at anybody in a very scary way that no one would dare to interrupt you. We know that’s how you are because we witnessed and experienced it too.”
“Besides, don’t you think your taking this relationship way too seriously already? It’s been just two weeks,” Jaejoong said, pouring orange juice in Hyunchul’s glass.
Junsu shook his head, and said, “Hyung, as much as I hate that stupid ex-boyfriend of yours, I have to say that one of the things that I admire about him is that he made sure that his whole clan knows about you and his relationship with you.”
“That’s different,” Jaejoong replied, suddenly nervous about bringing his past to the topic.
Chuckling, Junsu said, “Yes, it is. He was the one who was so proud of everything and you’re the one who was so freaking scared of the things that would happen if appa and umma find out about the two of you. So, basically, hyung, you don’t understand why this is such a big deal to Hyunchul.”
“You didn’t tell harabeoji and halmeoni about your relationship? For how long?” Hyunchul asked, curious.
“For six months,” Junsu answered for Jaejoong, “and if I didn’t stop pestering him about it, he won’t tell them anything until he finished high school. Poor guy though, if he didn’t became such an ass towards the end, I would still like him even if they broke up.”
“That long? I can’t wait for that long,” Hyunchul said, frowning at his father, “I find that really unfair.”
“Tell your father about it,” Junsu commented, slicing his pork katsudon.
Jaejoong rolled his eyes and turned to his son, saying, “Give Suhoon some time, I’m sure you know how…complicated their relationship is with each other, they’re not like us who can talk about things easily.”
“Well, I thought things have become better lately with the two of them,” Hyunchul said, sighing, as he stared at his food, “but I guess I was wrong…it doesn’t help that Mr. Jung’s always away.”
“That too, besides, you won’t know if his father’s fine with this whole homosexuality thing, he might freak out,” Jaejoong added, making Changmin and Junsu choke on their food.
“You don’t honestly think that, Jaejoong-hyung,” Changmin said, drinking some water, “this is Jung Yunho we’re talking about, he had his share of conquests back in high school, of course, he’s fine with it. I’m going to kill him if he says otherwise.”
Hyunchul turned to his father, and asked, “Share of conquests?”
“Well, Yunho did date some guys before…” Jaejoong answered, cautiously.
Hyunchul was about to say something when someone rang the doorbell outside. Knowing that they have to put a pause in their conversation, Junsu stood up from his seat to see who had decided to come by. “Look who we have here,” he said, grinning, as he opened the door to fetch their visitor from the gate. It did not take long and Junsu was back inside with Suhoon following behind him.
Surprised, Hyunchul asked, “What are you doing here?”
“I was calling you on your cellphone but it’s off,” Suhoon answered as Junsu closed the front door, not bothered even though Hyunchul’s father and uncles were in the same room as them, “I wanted to tell you that I called him awhile ago and I told him about us.”
“What did he say?” Hyunchul asked, anxious.
“Nothing, just a flat I’m-happy-for-you response,” Suhoon said, biting his lip to hide his disappointment caused by his father who he expected to be at least interested about him and Hyunchul, “I’m sorry if I didn’t tell him sooner because I don’t know how but it’s not because I’m ashamed of you or anything because that’s just stupid and it’s also not because I’m not ready to fight for you because even if he’s not in favor of it, I would willingly pack up my things and leave his house.”
“Suhoon…” Hyunchul said, smiling but guilty.
“Well, you’re welcome here anytime if ever you decide to run away,” Changmin butted in, grinning, “or you can stay at my place since I’m living all by myself.”
Annoyed, Hyunchul turned to his uncle and rolled his eyes at him.
“Why don’t you sit down and join us for dinner?” Jaejoong asked, standing up from his seat, “I’m just going to get you a plate.”
Suhoon did what he was told, suddenly feeling embarrassed of what he just did.
“I know you’re wishing that you should’ve have asked Hyunchul to talk to you in private but we appreciate the fact that you let us hear what you said,” Junsu told the younger boy, beaming, “it’s nice to know that he’s going to be okay with you.”
“Just make sure that you won’t let him make you do all the things he wants, you know how bratty he can be,” Changmin said, smirking at Hyunchul, who glared at him.
Suhoon chuckled despite the embarrassment he was still feeling. Finally, Jaejoong came out of the kitchen and set his plate, drinking glass and utensils in front of him. Leaning to Suhoon’s ear subtly, Jaejoong whispered, “Thank you.”
After drinking a glass of water from the kitchen, Hyunchul made his way up the stairs to finally get to bed. It has been a tiring weekend as he went to visit his grandparents on his mother’s side with his father. Though he wished that he could spend more time with the old couple, his grandparents did not want their only grandson to miss school just so he can bum around their house.
He was walking past his father’s room when he heard something that he had never hear before. Stepping closer his father’s door, which was slightly opened, Hyunchul peeked inside and saw his father sitting on his desk, crying. Curiosity mixed inside Hyunchul’s head as he leaned in closer to have a better look at his father. Narrowing his eyes, he saw that his father was staring at a white gold ring. Hyunchul then felt very confused because he remembered that his father gave him his and his mother’s wedding rings for safekeeping. ‘Whose ring would that be?’ Hyunchul asked himself. Just then, his father began wiping his eyes. Hyunchul knows that he has to go or he would be caught. Thus, he quickly went inside his bedroom as quietly as possible. He went to bed and got ready to sleep, telling himself that he would find out what is going on with his father tomorrow.
Hyunchul woke up very early the next day; he knows that if he wants to know what he wants to find out, he must be ahead from his father. Fortunately, he was able to think of the person who he can talk to without much difficulty. However, he thought that it would be better to talk to him before classes start. He took his shower and breakfast without waking anybody up because his Uncle Junsu would definitely one of the hindrances that he will encounter aside from his father. Grabbing his school bag after dressing up in his uniform, Hyunchul went to his father’s bedroom and walked inside quietly. His father was still sleeping and it is understandable, it was still 5:30AM after all and Jaejoong would usually get up around 6:30AM.
Eyeing his father’s sleeping figure cautiously, Hyunchul turned to the desk and saw that the ring was still there…along with other things that made Hyunchul’s head spin with even more confusion. Scattered around the desk are pictures of the younger version of his father with another guy. Grabbing one of the pictures to look at it closely, Hyunchul is certain that the guy with his father is Suhoon’s father, Jung Yunho. ‘But he didn’t tell me if they were close or not,’ Hyunchul said to himself. For all this time, he thought that his father and Yunho just went to the same high school and studied in the same year. The idea that they were close friends did not occur to him.
Just then, Hyunchul felt his father stirred on the bed. He put the picture down quickly, took the ring and slipped it inside his pocket. Turning to his father, who was still fast asleep, Hyunchul sat on the bed, said, “Appa, I’m going to school early today.”
Jaejoong slightly opened his eyes and looked at Hyunchul. “What time is it?” he asked, shielding his eyes from the light that is starting to fill the room.
“It’s almost 6:00AM, I think,” Hyunchul answered.
“Have you eaten breakfast already?” Jaejoong asked, sitting up.
“Yes, I did,” Hyunchul told him, standing up, “just go back to bed, appa. You’re pretty tired from yesterday, I can tell.”
“Alright,” Jaejoong reached his arms toward Hyunchul, asking for a hug, “be careful.”
“Yes, appa,” Hyunchul replied, pulling away from Jaejoong’s embrace.
As his father went back to his sleep, Hyunchul decided to take one of the pictures from the table before walking out of the room.
--- --- ---
Hyunchul got off the bus and walked inside the school campus. Students who have extracurricular activities were already at the school; Hyunchul could already hear the students who were practicing at the field and the gym. Proceeding inside the high school building, Hyunchul went straight to the faculty room, hoping that the person he wants to talk to was already there. ‘He should be,’ Hyunchul said to himself. He knocked and waited for someone to open the door. Fortunately, he does not have to wait long when a female teacher opened the door, and asked, “Yes, how may I help you?”
Smiling pleasantly, Hyunchul bowed and said, “Good morning, Mrs. Jang. Has Mr. Shin arrived already?”
Mrs. Jang smiled at Hyunchul, and answered, “Yes, but he’s in the Chemistry Lab. You can just go straight there. He’s not really doing anything important.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Jang,” Hyunchul replied, bowing once again before going to the Chemistry Lab.
The walk to the Chemistry Lab was not that long. However, Hyunchul took his time to give himself a chance to collect his thoughts as to how he would ask his questions to his teachers. When he was already in front of the lab, Hyunchul took a deep breath and knocked at the opened door to announce his presence.
Mr. Shin looked up from the book he is reading and smiled. “Hyunchul,” Mr. Shin said, closing his book, “you’re a bit way too early today, huh?”
“Yes,” Hyunchul replied, making his way to the teacher, “I was hoping I could talk to you before class.”
Gesturing the seat beside him, Mr. Shin said, “What is it that you want to talk about? Is it about the project that I mentioned a week ago?”
Hyunchul shook his head, and replied, “It’s not really school-related.”
“Oh, what is it about then?” Mr. Shin asked, intrigued.
Taking a seat, Hyunchul looked at his teacher intently, and said, “Can you promise me that you’re going to tell me everything? I know appa’s really close to you but I just need to know the whole truth.”
Confused, Mr. Shin nodded his head slowly, saying, “Yes, I promise.”
Sighing, Hyunchul took out the picture and the ring from his pocket and gave it to Mr. Shin, who took them and got a total shock. “How did you get these?” he asked, looking intently at the picture and the ring that Hyunchul gave him.
“Does it matter?” Hyunchul asked, taking a deep breath, “I saw appa looking at them last night…no, not just looking, actually…he was crying over them.”
“What exactly do you want to know?” Mr. Shin asked, hesitant, “I gave you my word. I promised I’ll tell you everything.”
“Everything about appa and Mr. Jung,” Hyunchul answered, serious.
Mr. Shin took a deep breath, and began, “Well, your father and Yunho went to this school at the same time. They were not really best of friends at the beginning…your father really hated Yunho at first because he thinks that Yunho is a self-absorbed, overconfident guy…but Yunho really liked your father very much.”
“They went out together?” Hyunchul asked, swallowing the lump the formed in his throat.
“After several failed attempts, yeah, your father gave Yunho a chance,” Mr. Shin answered, smiling at the memory, “there was a dance competition that time, they made a deal that if Yunho’s group would win, your father have to go out with him, but if Yunho’s group would lose, Yunho would leave your father alone completely,” he explained, “Yunho lost the deal but your father felt sorry for him so he decided to give Yunho a chance…they got really close and Jaejoong eventually agreed to be Yunho’s lover…” he continued, holding the ring up in the air, “this is the ring that Yunho gave him, if you look at it inside, you’re going to see their names engraved in it.”
Hyunchul took the ring as Mr. Shin handed it back to him and looked inside. Sure enough, he could see Kim Jaejoong and Jung Yunho written in Hangul neatly engraved inside. “When did they break up though?” he asked, turning back to Mr. Shin, anxious, “Why did they break up?”
Mr. Shin heaved another sigh, and said, “Before I answer your questions, please remember that your father loves you very much. He never loved anyone as much as he loves you. All the things that he did were all because of that love.”
“Please, Mr. Shin, just answer my questions,” Hyunchul said, ignoring what the teacher told him about his father’s unconditional love for him.
“They didn’t actually break up,” Mr. Shin told Hyunchul, looking at Hyunchul intently, “Yunho just left the day your father and mother were supposed to get married,” he explained, watching Hyunchul look away from him as he try to digest what he said, “they were already in college, your father was studying Hotel and Restaurant management while Yunho’s taking up Business Administration…the college where your father was part of had a party…he got drunk and ended up on a bed with your mother…”
‘Well, we met during college, we were at the same class, she was really beautiful and that I can’t just help but fall in love with her…’ Hyunchul remember what Jaejoong said when he was eight years old and began to shake his head in disbelief. “Appa and umma…never really dated?” he asked.
Mr. Shin shook his head, and said, “They knew each other because they were always at the same class…”
“The wedding…why didn’t their wedding pushed through?” Hyunchul asked, stopping himself from crying.
“When the priest asked your mother if she wants to take your father as her husband, she said ‘no’ and told your father to go back to Yunho…” Mr. Shin answered, hoping for Hyunchul to stop asking anymore questions, “she realized that your father would just end up miserable if he married her because he loves Yunho so much…your father told me that they agreed to stay together even after he get married with your mother…unfortunately, Yunho couldn’t easily accept the fact that he’s going to share the man he loves to someone else so he decided to leave…after Jaejoong left the church, he went straight to Yunho’s apartment but he was already gone…he just left him a letter, explaining his actions.”
“Did he go back umma after that?” Hyunchul asked, biting his lip.
“Yes, but your mother doesn’t want to resume the wedding anymore…” Mr. Shin told him, frowning, “she told your father about her condition and made him promise to take care of you whatever happens to her…” he added, handing the picture back to Hyunchul, “your father focused on your mother right after, he never left her side. After you were born, he left you to your grandparents so that he can fulfill his military duties. While inside, he was already planning his and your life ahead. He got in contact with your mother’s brothers who were already studying in L.A. that time. They told him that they can help him get a job in this prestigious hotel once he finishes his military service and he took that opportunity. After two years in the military, he went back to you and brought you to L.A. instantly.”
Hyunchul nodded as he got up from his seat. “Thank you, Mr. Shin,” he said, bowing his head to the teacher, “I appreciate that you really told me everything.”
Mr. Shin smiled sadly at the young boy, and said, “You’re welcome, Hyunchul, but keep in mind what I told you. Your father loves you very much, he just wanted what is best for you.”
Though he does not want to hear those words anymore, Hyunchul nodded and asked, “Can you please not tell appa that I went to you and talked about this?”
Knowing that it is not the right thing to do, Mr. Shin still agreed. He is aware at the emotional whirlwind that is going on inside Hyunchul’s head right now, thus, assuring him that he can trust him will be the better thing to do for the time being.
Hyunchul bowed again and left the lab to gather up his thoughts. He was stepping down the stairs when he felt all the strength on his limbs disappear as he slide down to sit at one of the steps. Tears fell down from his eyes as he looked up at the window and stared at the sky. ‘He lied…’ he thought as hurt and disappointment filled his heard, ‘he lied about everything, umma…he lied to me about everything…’
--- --- ---
It has been thirty minutes since their first class started but Hyunchul has not arrived to school yet. Worried, Suhoon could not stop staring at the seat next to him. He was trying to recall his last conversation with Hyunchul the night before but all he could remember were Hyunchul’s stories about his grandparents who he visited yesterday with his father. Wanting to calm himself, Suhoon excused himself from the teacher to go to the bathroom. As he got inside the bathroom, Suhoon fished out his cellphone from his pocket and called Hyunchul.
“Suhoon…” Hyunchul said as he picked up the call.
“Hey, where are you?” Suhoon asked, deeply worried, “Why aren’t you here yet?
“At home…” Hyunchul answered, sighing, “I’m not feeling really well so I decided to stay at home…”
“I see…” Suhoon replied, relieved, “sorry for disturbing you then.”
“Sorry if I wasn’t able to tell you,” Hyunchul told him, “but don’t worry, I’m fine.”
“It’s alright. Just get some rest,” Suhoon replied, smiling, “I’ll go back to class now, bye.”
“Bye,” Hyunchul said as he ended the call.
Suhoon put his cellphone back to his pocket and sighed. Though he was relieved after talking to Hyunchul even for just a bit, he could not help but feel that there is something amiss. However, he just shrugged it off and decided to visit Hyunchul after school.
--- --- ---
Junsu and Changmin stood by the door and stared at Jaejoong, who is standing in middle of his room, surrounded by his mess. When Jaejoong woke up this morning, he found out that his ring was missing from its usual place. Thus, he called Changmin and told him that he will not be going to the restaurant that day so that he can look for it. Jaejoong had totally stripped off his room while looking for the ring but he still did not find it.
“Seriously, hyung,” Changmin said, scratching the back of his head in irritation, “maybe you left the ring somewhere else, if it’s here, you would’ve already found it.”
“It’s here, Changmin, it’s supposed to be here!” Jaejoong said, frustrated, “I was looking at it last night so there’s no way that I left it somewhere else.”
“Why were you looking at it anyway?” Junsu asked, angry, “Don’t you dare tell me that you’re still not over that Jung Yunho. For goodness sake, hyung, seventeen years have already passed!”
“Yes! Seventeen years but I still love him!” Jaejoong yelled at his younger brother, “I know I should’ve gotten over him seventeen years ago but I couldn’t! I love him so much. I loved him then. I love him now. I’ve always loved him so just deal with it!”
Just then, the doorbell rang. Junsu, who was shaking his head at what he had heard, left the room and went downstairs to open the door. Seeing Suhoon outside the gates, Junsu sighed, and thought, ‘Don’t tell me they had another fight.’ Junsu opened the gates, and said, “Suhoon, what brings you here?”
“Hi, Mr. Kim, I just decided to drop by to visit Hyunchul,” Suhoon answered, smiling at the other man.
“Hyunchul? Why would you need to visit Hyunchul?” Junsu asked, confused.
Suhoon stared at Junsu, puzzled. “He’s inside, isn’t he?” he asked as worry starts to fill him instantly, “He wasn’t at school the whole day. I called him to check up on him and he said that he decided to stay at home because he wasn’t feeling well.”
Junsu widened his eyes in panic and ushered Suhoon inside the house quickly. Once they were already inside, Junsu shut the door behind him and called for his brother and best friend to come down immediately.
“What is it?” Changmin asked as he looked at Suhoon in confusion, “What are you doing here?”
“Where’s hyung?” Junsu asked, annoyed that Jaejoong decided to stay behind to look for his ring.
“He’s still looking for his ring,” Changmin answered, shrugging.
“What?!” Junsu exclaimed and yelled, “Stop looking for that stupid ring! Your son’s missing!”
Changmin stared at both Junsu and Suhoon, and asked, “What do you mean by that?”
Suddenly, Jaejoong descended the stairs, and said, “What are you talking about?”
“Hyunchul didn’t go to school today, Mr. Kim,” Suhoon told him, panicking, “I called him to ask why he hasn’t arrived yet and he told me that he’s not feeling well so he decided to stay at home.”
Terrified, Jaejoong told Suhoon, “That’s not possible, he told me that he’ll be going to school earlier today this morning.”
Knowing that something is not right, Changmin took his cellphone from his pocket and dialed Hyunchul’s number. However, Changmin felt himself freeze as he was greeted with the voice prompt that says “The number you have dialed is either unattended or out of the coverage area.” He put his cellphone down and turned to Jaejoong, and said, “He turned off his cellphone.”
“Oh God,” Jaejoong breathed out, trying to calm down, “I’m going to get my car keys.”
Suhoon was watching Jaejoong went up the stairs when he felt his cellphone vibrate inside his pocket. Thinking that it might be Hyunchul, Suhoon quickly answered the call. “Hyunchul?” he said, not bothering to see who really called, making Junsu and Changmin turn to him in anticipation.
“Suhoon, it’s me…” his father said from the other line.
“Appa…” Suhoon muttered, disappointed, “I’m sorry, I thought –”
“Hyunchul’s at the hospital,” Yunho told him, making Suhoon panic to the fullest.
“He was waiting outside the dance studio this just awhile ago,” Yunho explained, “he said he wanted to talk to me but when I asked him what is it about, he suddenly fainted.”
“How is he?”
“I don’t know,” Yunho answered, sighing in concern, “Dr. Park is still checking up on him. Please inform his father about this.”
“I will, I’m here at their house, we’ll be there,” Suhoon told his father as he turned to Jaejoong who just got back with his keys, “thanks for calling, appa.”
“Does your father know where Hyunchul is?” Changmin asked, taking note that Suhoon told his father that he was in Hyunchul’s house.
Suhoon nodded, and said, “Appa said Hyunchul went to see him this afternoon at the dance studio…”
“Oh, he’s fine then?” Jaejoong asked, hopeful.
Frowning, Suhoon answered, “He said that Hyunchul fainted even before Hyunchul got the chance to tell him what he came for…”
“Where is he then?” Junsu asked, demandingly.
“He brought him to the hospital, Dr. Park is still observing Hyunchul right now,” Suhoon said quickly.
Slightly relieved, Changmin turned to Jaejoong, and said, “Let’s go there now.”
Jaejoong nodded his head and led them out of the house to go to the hospital.
